A travel eSIM is a digital SIM with mobile data for another country. How to pick a plan, when to install and switch it on, and what happens to bank SMS.

Contents
A travel eSIM is a digital SIM card with a mobile data plan for another country. You download it to your phone from a QR code, with no plastic card and no shop visit. Install it at home over Wi-Fi, then switch mobile data to it when you land. Matrimix sells travel eSIMs inside its Telegram wallet, paid from your balance in USDT or USDC.
Key facts (October 2026)
- What it is. A carrier profile written to the eSIM chip built into your phone. Apple supports eSIM on iPhone XS, XR and later; many Android phones do too.
- Data only. A Matrimix eSIM has no phone number, no calls and no SMS. Calls and messages go through apps.
- Your home SIM stays. The phone runs two lines, so bank SMS still reach your usual number.
- The plan starts on first connection to a network at your destination, not when you buy or install it.
- One installation. An eSIM profile installs once; don't delete it until the trip is over.
- At Matrimix: 190+ countries and regional plans under Services → Travel SIM cards. No bank card, no passport.
- Check your phone: dial
*#06#. An EID line means eSIM support. The phone must also be carrier-unlocked.
What is a travel eSIM?
An eSIM stores your carrier's details on a chip inside the phone instead of a plastic card, so a new "SIM" downloads in minutes. Apple calls it an industry-standard digital SIM.
A travel eSIM is a prepaid data plan for one country or a region. Apple's travel guidance lists it as an option: worldwide providers sell prepaid data for more than 190 countries, and you can buy before you leave. The eSIM runs as a second line: data goes through it, calls and texts stay on your home number.
Travel eSIM vs roaming vs a local SIM
| Roaming with your carrier | Local SIM card | Travel eSIM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you get it | Nothing to buy, but check your carrier's rates | Airport kiosk or shop after arrival | Online, in advance |
| ID | Not needed | Some countries ask for a passport, depending on local rules | Not needed at Matrimix |
| Phone number | Yours | A local one | None, data only |
| Cost | Your carrier's roaming rates | Local prices | A fixed plan, price shown before you pay |
| Data the moment you land | Yes, if roaming is on | Only after you buy it | Yes, if installed in advance |
With roaming, your carrier sets the price. A local SIM means finding a kiosk after landing and, in some countries, showing a passport. A travel eSIM is bought in advance, at a price you see before paying, and works on arrival. Detailed comparisons: eSIM vs roaming and eSIM vs a local SIM.
How to choose a plan: country or region, gigabytes, days
Country or region. Going to one country? Take a plan for it, for example eSIM Turkey. Crossing several borders? A regional plan is simpler: Europe, Balkans, South-East Asia. The bot shows how many countries each plan covers.
Gigabytes. Maps and messengers use little; video and laptop tethering use a lot. See how much data you need for a trip.
Days. The validity should cover the whole trip. It counts from your first connection at the destination, so buying early is fine. Use the eSIM on the trip you bought it for.
Leave a margin. An existing eSIM can't be topped up: when the data runs out, you buy a new plan.
When to install and switch on your eSIM
The most common question is how to activate an eSIM abroad. This order works:
- At home, on Wi-Fi. Buy and install the eSIM. Its validity does not start yet. Guides: iPhone and Android.
- Before you fly. Keep mobile data on your main SIM for now. Don't delete the new line.
- On arrival. In cellular settings, choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn on Data Roaming for that line. Turn data roaming off on your home SIM so your carrier doesn't bill you.
- No connection? Apple suggests turning Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds and off again, and making sure date and time are set automatically.
Two SIMs: your home number and bank SMS
A data eSIM doesn't replace your number. Keep your main SIM on for calls and SMS and bank codes keep arriving; Apple notes your primary line keeps working when both lines are on. Ask your carrier what incoming calls and SMS cost while roaming. Setup details: keep your home number with a travel eSIM.
Hotspot
Sharing eSIM data with a laptop or a friend's phone usually works, since the hotspot uses the line set for mobile data. Some networks may limit tethering, and a laptop burns through data far faster than a phone.
Phone compatibility
eSIM works on iPhone XR, XS and later, Google Pixel 4 and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later and many more: see eSIM compatible phones. Exceptions exist: most iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao have two physical SIM slots and no eSIM, and a carrier-locked phone rejects other eSIMs. How to test yours: is my phone eSIM compatible.
How buying works at Matrimix

- Pay from your wallet balance in USDT or USDC. Any other coin on the balance is swapped automatically at the rate quoted up front. No bank card is needed. How to fund the wallet: buy an eSIM with crypto; whether ID is needed: eSIM without ID.
- The eSIM arrives right after payment, inside Telegram: in the Mini App and under Profile → Purchases. You get a QR code, manual-entry details (SM-DP+ address and activation code) and, on iPhone with iOS 17.4 or later, an Install eSIM button. The order page shows the data you have left.
