Internet in Turkey for tourists (2026)
Internet in Turkey for tourists: a travel eSIM installed before you fly, or a Turkcell, Vodafone or Türk Telekom SIM. IMEI rule, blocked sites, coverage.

Contents
The easiest way to get internet in Turkey as a tourist is a travel eSIM that you buy and install before you fly, so you land online. A local tourist SIM from Turkcell, Vodafone or Türk Telekom is the alternative if you need a Turkish number. In the Matrimix wallet in Telegram a Turkey eSIM is data only and paid from your balance in USDT or USDC: eSIM Turkey.
Key facts (October 2026)
- Three networks: Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. All three sell tourist prepaid SIMs (and eSIMs) at airport stores and city shops against your passport.
- Buy your eSIM before you land. Since July 2025 Turkey's regulator BTK has blocked the websites and apps of more than 50 foreign eSIM sellers inside the country. Sellers and travel guides report that an eSIM installed before arrival keeps working.
- IMEI rule: a phone brought from abroad can be used on Turkish networks for up to 120 days without registration; after that it is cut off. A 2019 BTK decision also limits data roaming for such phones to the same 120 days. A normal holiday is far shorter.
- Blocked at the time of writing: Discord, Roblox, Grindr and several VPN services. WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, YouTube, X and Wikipedia open normally, but social apps have been throttled during protests.
- Coverage: strong in Istanbul and along the Antalya coast; patchy in Cappadocia's deeper valleys and none in its underground cities.
Current plans and prices: eSIM Turkey. Some regional plans, such as those for Europe, include Turkey; check the country list on the plan before you buy.
Your options compared
| Option | Where you get it | Documents | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Online before the trip, e.g. in Telegram | None for our eSIM | Short trips, being online on landing | Data only; foreign eSIM sites are blocked inside Turkey |
| Tourist SIM or eSIM (Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom) | Airport stores, city shops; Turkcell also online | Passport; Vodafone also asks for a local address such as your hotel | A Turkish number, local calls | Queue on arrival; the 120-day IMEI limit for long stays |
| Home roaming | Your own carrier | None | Emergencies, occasional calls | Usually the most expensive per gigabyte |
| Hotel and airport Wi-Fi | Hotel, cafes, airports | Sometimes a passport scan | Evenings at the hotel | Shared, slower at busy times, useless on the road |
Turkcell lets visitors apply online up to 90 days before arrival and activate an eSIM in its app with a biometric passport. Prices change often, so compare them at the counter.
The 120-day IMEI rule
Turkey keeps a register of phone IMEI numbers. According to BTK, a phone brought from abroad can be used for 120 days without registration; after that it is shut off from Turkish networks. Türk Telekom says tourists without a residence permit cannot register a phone at all.
For a one- or two-week holiday this changes nothing, whichever option you choose. It matters only if you stay close to four months, because the BTK limit also covers data roaming.
Blocked sites and apps
Independent daily tests from Turkish home connections (VPNalert, October 2026) show Discord, Roblox and Grindr blocked, Proton VPN blocked, and ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark and Psiphon blocked on some networks. Most big services open: Google, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, YouTube, X, Wikipedia, Netflix and ChatGPT.
Two more things are worth knowing:
- X works, but individual accounts are withheld inside Turkey on court orders; about 500 were withheld in one week in September 2026.
- Throttling during unrest. After the Istanbul mayor's detention in March 2025, X, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Telegram and others were slowed in Istanbul for about 42 hours, and again for about 21 hours in September 2025.
Using a VPN is not banned by law in Turkey, but BTK has had internet providers block well-known VPN services since 2023. We do not give instructions for getting around blocks; follow local law.
Coverage in Istanbul, Antalya and Cappadocia
- Istanbul: all three networks cover the central districts well, and the difference between them is smallest here.
- Antalya and the coast: the resort strip is well covered. Signal can fade on boat trips away from shore.
- Cappadocia: Göreme and Ürgüp have good 4G; travel guides report that deep valleys and some cave hotels have weak signal and the underground cities have none. Download offline maps before you go.
Hotel Wi-Fi is usually free but shared by everyone in the building, so mobile data is often the more reliable connection in resorts.
Before you go
- Check your phone. It must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Dial
*#06#: an EID line means eSIM support. Models: compatible phones. - Buy the eSIM at home. Open @MatrimixBot, then Services → Travel SIM cards, search for Turkey and pick a plan. The price is in USD and shown before you confirm; USDT or USDC pay directly, and another coin on your balance is swapped automatically at the quoted rate. No bank card, no passport.
- Install it over Wi-Fi before the trip. The QR code, manual codes (SM-DP+ address and activation code) and, on iPhone with iOS 17.4+, a one-tap install button appear in the Mini App and in Profile → Purchases.
- On landing, switch mobile data to the eSIM line and turn on data roaming for that line. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in Turkey, not at purchase.
- Keep your home SIM on for bank SMS if your phone has dual SIM.
Good to know
- Data only: no Turkish number, no calls, no SMS. Call through apps.
- Pick enough data up front. A plan is not topped up; if the data runs out you buy another plan, which is harder once you are inside Turkey, so choose the size for the whole trip at home.
- Don't delete the profile: an eSIM installs once. A bought eSIM cannot be returned; a failed order is refunded to your balance automatically.
- Telegram is required to buy and manage the eSIM in our wallet.
- Matrimix holds your balance for you: no seed phrases and no extra apps — everything opens in Telegram.
- Hotspot usually works but can be limited on some networks.
