How Much Data Do I Need for Travel? Per Day and Per Week
Contents

How much data do you need for travel? Maps, messaging and bookings use about 0.3 GB a day. Add social media and a video call home and it is closer to 1 GB a day; with video streaming, plan for 2–3 GB. For a week that means roughly 3 to 20 GB. Below are per-activity figures from carriers and app makers, a table for picking a Matrimix eSIM plan, and ways to use less.

Key facts (October 2026)

  • Map navigation uses 100–200 KB per minute, roughly 6–12 MB per hour (UK carrier EE).
  • Social apps: a Facebook feed uses 1–2 MB per minute and YouTube or other video streaming 2–3 MB per minute (EE).
  • Video calls use 90 MB to 1.4 GB per hour depending on quality (EE). Zoom recommends 600 kbps each way for a one-to-one video call and 1.2 Mbps each way for 720p HD.
  • App voice calls need 60–100 kbps (Zoom), about 30–45 MB per hour in each direction.
  • Netflix: Low quality up to 0.3 GB per hour, Medium up to 0.7 GB, HD up to 3 GB. On mobile, the Automatic setting gives about 4 hours per GB.
  • A photo sent in a messaging app is about 200 KB and one web page about 1 MB (Hong Kong's telecom regulator OFCA).

These are averages; real use depends on the app, video quality and network.

The takeaway: maps and chat cost almost nothing; video eats the gigabytes, whether it is a feed, a call or a film.

How much data per day: three profiles

We added up the table figures for three typical travellers. This is our own calculation, not a statistic.

  • Light — about 0.3 GB a day. One to two hours of navigation, messaging with a few dozen photos, 20–30 minutes of websites and bookings, short app calls. The table gives 0.1–0.2 GB; the rest is headroom for background updates.
  • Typical — about 1 GB a day. All of the above plus an hour of social media with short videos and a 30-minute video call home.
  • Heavy — 2–3 GB a day. Plus one to two hours of series at medium quality, uploading photos and stories, and the odd hotspot session for a laptop.

How much data for the whole trip

How much data for a week? 3 GB for maps and messaging, 7–10 GB for a normal holiday with social media, around 20 GB if you stream video. If you share your connection with a travel partner through hotspot, add both people's use.

Pick a plan by size and length in the travel eSIM catalog or straight on a country page such as eSIM Japan. With Matrimix you buy the eSIM in the Telegram wallet under Services → Travel SIM cards and pay from the wallet balance in USDT or USDC; any other coin on the balance is swapped automatically at the quoted rate. Data left is shown on the order page under Profile → Purchases.

Does the destination change how much data you need?

Barely: an hour of video weighs the same in Tokyo and Lisbon. What changes is which services work: Google notes that offline maps cannot be downloaded in some countries or regions, and some apps are restricted in China. Read the destination guide first, for example internet in China for tourists.

How to use less data

  1. Download offline maps at home over Wi-Fi. In Google Maps, search for the city, swipe the place sheet, then tap More → Download offline map. Offline maps guide you as long as the whole route is inside the downloaded area, without traffic or transit directions.
  2. Turn on Low Data Mode or Data Saver. On iPhone with two lines: Settings → Cellular → tap the eSIM line → Low Data Mode. It turns off Background App Refresh, automatic downloads and iCloud Photos updates. On Android (Pixel): Settings → Network & internet → Data Saver.
  3. Leave backups and updates for Wi-Fi. Turn off automatic app updates over cellular data.
  4. Tame your messaging apps. WhatsApp itself recommends turning off media auto-download over cellular and roaming: Settings → Storage and data. Network usage in the same menu shows what WhatsApp has used.
  5. Lower video quality. In YouTube: profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences → Data saver for mobile networks. Download films at the hotel.
  6. Watch the hotspot. A tethered laptop can pull a multi-gigabyte system update. Hotspot usually works, though some networks may limit it.
  7. Check what is left on the order page; if you are running low, buy another plan while you still have a connection.

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi; on arrival select it for cellular data and turn on data roaming for that line. Validity starts when it first connects to a network at your destination.

Good to know

  • These are estimates. The tables use average figures from carriers and apps; HD video can multiply your real use.
  • Data only. A travel eSIM has no phone number, calls or SMS; call through apps.
  • Buy with headroom. A package is not topped up: when it runs out, you simply buy a new plan in the same place. A bought eSIM cannot be returned; if an order fails, the money returns to your balance automatically.
  • Telegram and a compatible phone required. Check yours by dialling *#06# — an EID line means eSIM support. See eSIM compatible phones.
  • Matrimix holds your balance for you. No seed phrases and no extra apps — everything opens in Telegram.

FAQ

How much data do I need per day when travelling?

About 0.3 GB for maps, messaging and bookings, about 1 GB with social media and one video call, and 2–3 GB a day if you stream video or run a hotspot.

How much data do I need for 7 days?

3 GB for light use, 7–10 GB for a typical holiday with social media, and about 20 GB if you watch video. Buy with headroom: an eSIM cannot be topped up, so running out means buying another plan.

How much data does Google Maps use?

Navigation uses roughly 100–200 KB per minute, or 6–12 MB per hour, according to EE. With an offline map downloaded in advance you need very little mobile data at all.

How much data does a WhatsApp video call use?

EE estimates 90 MB to 1.4 GB per hour for a video call, depending on quality. A voice call over an app uses a fraction of that, so save long video calls for hotel Wi-Fi.
