How to Pay in Russia as a Tourist: What Works in 2026
Contents

How to pay in Russia as a tourist in 2026? Bring cash to exchange for rubles, because Visa and Mastercard cards issued abroad do not work in shops, at ATMs or online. For a longer stay, a Russian Mir card or the PayInRussia app helps. If you already hold USDT, you can convert it to rubles in a Telegram wallet and pay SBP QR codes in rubles.

Key facts (October 2026)

  • Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Amex and JCB cards issued outside Russia have not worked in Russia since March 2022: not at terminals, not at ATMs, not online. Apple Pay and Google Pay with those cards fail too.
  • Foreign citizens made 15.59 million trips to Russia in 2025, 1.64 million of them for tourism (FSB Border Service data via Interfax). Every visitor from outside the former Soviet Union meets the same payment problem.
  • You can bring cash worth up to USD 10,000 per person without a customs declaration.
  • SBP (the Faster Payments System, «СБП») QR codes are common at tills, at many museum and hotel desks and on websites; some taxis show them too. Whoever pays them must have rubles.
  • PayInRussia: a balance of up to 15,000 ₽ without documents, up to 600,000 ₽ after identification, no cash withdrawals.
  • Matrimix, as of October 2026: 3% fee per QR payment; rubles are bought with USDT at the wallet rate, shown before you confirm; rubles sent to a phone number or card cost 6% (from 1,500 ₽ over SBP).
  • Metro: 75 ₽ per ride on a Troika card in Moscow, 65 ₽ on a Podorozhnik card in St Petersburg.

Cash: still the safety net

Cash is the only method that works with no setup at all. Exchange points in Russia are run by banks; a passport is usually requested, and airport rates are the weakest, so change a small amount at the airport and the rest in the city. Shops cannot accept dollars or euros directly, only rubles. Limits, currencies and daily budgets: how much cash can I bring to Russia.

Paying from a ruble balance, step by step

Matrimix is a custodial crypto wallet inside Telegram, the Mini App of @MatrimixBot. It does not pay merchants in crypto. You convert USDT to rubles in a separate step, and the wallet pays the SBP QR code in rubles: the merchant receives rubles, exactly as from a Russian bank app.

Before the trip

  1. Open @MatrimixBot and launch the Mini App. The interface is in English or Russian (Profile → Settings → Language); opening the wallet does not ask for e-mail, phone or documents.
  2. Tap Deposit, pick USDT and a network, and send USDT from your exchange or wallet. TRC20 and TON are the usual choices: USDT TRC20 address, USDT TON address. Send only on the network of the address. Deposits are free; the sending network charges its own fee.
  3. Convert part of it in Swap (USDT → RUB) or on the Ruble card → Swap. The rate is shown before you confirm. Buy only what you expect to spend; leftovers can be swapped back to USDT in Swap.

At the till

  1. Ask the cashier for an SBP QR code (phrases below).
  2. In the bottom menu tap the QR button in the centre → Scan. For a payment link, tap Pay by payment link → Paste from clipboard → Continue. If the camera does not read the code, take a photo of it and use From gallery.
  3. Check Recipient, Amount, Fee and You pay. If the code has no amount, enter the amount you agreed with the seller.
  4. Slide Pay … and wait for Paid. Show that screen to the cashier; Receipt gives you a PDF.

The quote lives about 30 seconds; if you see "Rate expired — refresh", refresh and check again. Product page: /qr-pay.

Paying a person: landlord, guide, driver

Many people in Russia take payment as a transfer to their phone number. In the wallet: Services → Payouts via SBP and card number → on the Withdraw via SBP / card screen choose SBP (receiver's phone and bank) or Card (card number) → check → slide Send rubles → Delivered, usually within a few minutes. The fee is 6%; SBP payouts run from 1,500 to 60,000 ₽, card payouts from 3,500 to 100,000 ₽. This is meant for someone who is in Russia paying a local person, not for sending money from abroad. Russian phrases for the till

  • «Можно оплатить по QR-коду СБП?» (Mozhno oplatit' po QR-kodu SBP?) — Can I pay by SBP QR code?
  • «Покажите, пожалуйста, QR-код на сумму» (Pokazhite, pozhaluysta, QR-kod na summu) — Please show a QR code with the amount.
  • «Можно перевести по номеру телефона?» (Mozhno perevesti po nomeru telefona?) — Can I transfer to your phone number?
  • «Чек, пожалуйста» (Chek, pozhaluysta) — Receipt, please.

Telegram in Russia: plan for it

Telegram is largely blocked in Russia: since mid-March 2026 most connections fail on mobile data and Wi-Fi alike, and since July 2026 foreign SIM and eSIM roaming is filtered too. The wallet works only when Telegram connects, so set it up, fund it and buy some rubles before you fly: rubles bought in advance wait on the balance until you need them. Carry some cash for the moments the connection drops. More: does Telegram work in Russia. For maps, taxis and ordinary websites, install an eSIM for Russia at home before you fly; a foreign SIM gets no mobile data for the first 24 hours in Russia.

Federal Law 282-FZ, in force since 1 September 2026, forbids accepting digital currency as payment for goods and services in Russia and spreading information about such payments. Holding and exchanging crypto is a separate matter. In the model above the merchant only ever receives rubles over SBP. Plain-language overview: is crypto legal in Russia. This is not legal advice.

Good to know

  • The price is shown up front. A QR payment costs 3%, and the rubles are bought at the wallet rate; payouts cost 6% with the minimums above. You see the full total before you confirm, with no card and no cash to carry. Prices are as of October 2026; the confirmation screen and /fees show the current numbers.
  • Matrimix holds your coins and rubles for you. No seed phrases and no extra apps — everything opens in Telegram.
  • A confirmed payment goes through at once. A QR payment or payout cannot be cancelled once confirmed, so check the amount and details. A merchant refund can be claimed with Request a refund and returns to the ruble balance without the fee; a failed payment returns automatically.
  • Limits. Up to 200,000 ₽ per payment, 200,000 ₽ and 20 payments a day, 1,000,000 ₽ a month; the ruble balance is capped at 200,000 ₽.
  • Not every till has SBP, and Telegram may be slow on mobile data. Swap your rubles in advance — they will wait on the balance — and keep a few notes for places without a QR code.
  • Invite friends. If friends open the wallet through your link, you get a share of their QR fees: crypto wallet referral program.

FAQ

Can I pay with crypto in Russia?

No. Russian law forbids merchants to accept crypto as payment, and shops do not take it. What works: convert USDT to rubles in a wallet such as Matrimix as a separate step, then pay SBP QR codes in rubles. The merchant receives rubles.

Do Visa and Mastercard work in Russia in 2026?

Not if they were issued outside Russia. Since March 2022 they are declined at terminals, ATMs and online, and Apple Pay or Google Pay with those cards fails too. Plan on cash, a Mir card, PayInRussia or a ruble balance.

What is the easiest way to pay in Russia for a short trip?

Cash covers everything with no setup. If you already hold USDT, a ruble balance in a Telegram wallet lets you pay SBP QR codes in shops, cafes and taxis without carrying the whole budget in notes, without queueing at an exchange point and with the total shown before you confirm.

How much does it cost to pay a QR code from a USDT balance?

As of October 2026: 3% of the check; rubles are bought at the wallet rate. The fee and the rate are shown before you confirm; current numbers are on /fees.

Can I pay my landlord or guide in rubles without a Russian bank account?

Yes, if you are in Russia. Matrimix sends rubles from your ruble balance to a Russian phone number over SBP (1,500–60,000 ₽) or to a Russian card (3,500–100,000 ₽) for a 6% fee. Check the receiver's details: a payout cannot be reversed.
