International Students in Russia: Money, Rent, Tuition
Contents

International students in Russia cannot use cards from home, so student money comes down to three tools: cash for the first weeks, a Russian bank card for the long run, and a way to pay rent, tuition and daily costs in rubles. If your family supports you in USDT, a Telegram wallet can convert it to rubles, pay SBP QR codes and send rubles to a landlord.

Key facts (October 2026)

  • 422 thousand international students studied in Russia in 2025/26, according to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education; the largest groups came from Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, China, Uzbekistan and India.
  • Cards from home do not work: Visa and Mastercard cards issued abroad have been blocked in Russia since March 2022.
  • A Russian bank account for a student usually needs a passport, a notarised translation, a migration card, migration registration and university documents or the education contract.
  • Tax residency: being in Russia for 183 days or more within 12 consecutive months makes you a Russian tax resident.
  • Matrimix ruble payouts (rent, a tutor, a room-mate): fee 6%; over SBP 1,500–60,000 ₽ per payout, to a card 3,500–100,000 ₽.
  • SBP QR payments from a ruble balance: fee 3% of the check; the rubles are bought with USDT at the wallet rate, shown before you confirm.
  • Limits: up to 200,000 ₽ per QR payment and per day, 1,000,000 ₽ a month; the ruble balance holds up to 200,000 ₽.

The pattern: anything with an SBP QR code can be paid from a ruble balance, anything paid "to a phone number or card" can be paid with a ruble payout, and a bank transfer by invoice details needs a Russian bank account.

The first weeks, before you have a Russian card

Opening a Russian account takes time: you need migration registration first, and your university's international office usually helps with it. Plan your first weeks on other means.

  • Cash. Bring US dollars, euros, yuan or dirhams and exchange them at a bank. Up to the equivalent of USD 10,000 per person can be brought in without a customs declaration; see how much cash can I bring to Russia.
  • A ruble balance in a Telegram wallet. Matrimix is a custodial wallet inside Telegram (@MatrimixBot). Opening it needs no e-mail, phone number or documents, and the interface is in English and Russian. Set it up and fund it at home: Telegram is restricted in Russia, so do not leave this until arrival (see does Telegram work in Russia).

Paying rent to a landlord

Russian landlords usually want rubles by phone number over SBP or to a Russian card. A ruble payout does exactly that from your ruble balance:

  1. Agree the method with the landlord: SBP by phone number (ask which bank) or a Russian card number.
  2. Top up the ruble balance: Swap (USDT → RUB) or the Ruble card → Swap. You need the rent plus the 6% fee.
  3. Open Services → Payouts via SBP and card number.
  4. On Withdraw via SBP / card, choose SBP (receiver's phone and bank) or Card (card number), and enter the amount the landlord should receive.
  5. Check the receiver details. Money sent to valid details of the wrong person cannot be returned.
  6. Slide Send rubles and wait for Delivered, usually a few minutes. If the bank rejects the payout, the money returns to your balance.

Example, prices as of October 2026: rent of 30,000 ₽ over SBP. The fee is 6%, or 1,800 ₽, so 31,800 ₽ leaves your ruble balance; those rubles are bought with USDT at the wallet rate, and the landlord gets the rent without you needing a Russian bank account. There is also a monthly limit per receiver, shown under Limits. More in how to pay someone in Russia and on /rub-payout.

Tuition and dormitory invoices

Universities bill tuition in rubles under your education contract. Ask the international office which methods it accepts.

  • If the invoice or payment page offers an SBP QR code, pay it from the ruble balance: the QR button → Scan, or Pay by payment link, check Recipient, Amount, Fee and You pay, slide Pay …, wait for Paid, and download the PDF Receipt for the accounts office. The university receives rubles over SBP.
  • A large semester fee may exceed the limit of 200,000 ₽ per payment and per day. Ask whether instalments are possible, so each part fits the limit.
  • If the university accepts only a bank transfer by invoice details, the wallet cannot pay it. Payouts go to a phone number or a Russian card, not to a university's bank account.

Daily spending by SBP QR code

Many shops, cafes and canteens show an SBP QR code at the till. Ask «Можно оплатить по QR-коду СБП?» ("Can I pay by SBP QR code?"), scan it with the QR button → Scan and confirm. A 300 ₽ lunch costs 309 ₽ from the ruble balance with the 3% fee.

If a QR code has no amount, the wallet asks you to enter it; agree the amount with the cashier first. Details on /qr-pay and in the guide to SBP QR payments from a ruble balance funded with USDT.

Support from family in USDT

Many students' families already hold USDT. Before anyone sends anything, check the rules where your family lives: crypto is legal in some countries, restricted or banned in others (trading is banned in mainland China, for example).

  • To your deposit address. Tap Deposit, choose USDT and a network, and share the address. TRC20 and TON are common and cheap to send; deposits are free on our side.
  • By Matrimix ID. If your relatives also use Matrimix, transfers between users are free and instant; see /transfers.
  • Keep records of what you receive and convert, for taxes at home.

This guide does not cover sending money to Russia from the US, the UK or the EU, where sanctions rules are strict.

When to open a Mir card anyway

A ruble balance works from your first day in the country; a local account adds what only a Russian bank can do. Open a Mir card when:

  • you stay for a semester or longer and pay rent every month;
  • you receive a stipend or a salary from a Russian employer, which is usually paid to a Russian account;
  • your university accepts tuition only by bank transfer.

Once you have a Russian card, the wallet can still help: rubles bought with USDT can be sent to your own card with a payout. Requirements and bank programmes are in the guide to the Mir card for foreigners.

  • Russian law forbids merchants to accept crypto as payment. In the wallet, you convert USDT to rubles as a separate step and the merchant, landlord or university receives rubles. See is crypto legal in Russia.
  • Under the currency law, a foreign student is usually a non-resident unless they hold a Russian residence permit.
  • After 183 days in Russia within 12 months you become a Russian tax resident, and converting crypto can be taxable at home as well.
  • This is not legal or tax advice.

Good to know

  • The price is shown up front. 3% for QR payments and 6% for payouts as of October 2026, and the rubles themselves are bought at the wallet rate. The total is always on screen before you confirm. Current numbers are on /fees.
  • Matrimix holds your coins and rubles for you. No seed phrases and no extra apps — everything opens in Telegram.
  • Swap rubles in advance. Telegram is restricted in Russia, and when it does not connect you cannot reach the wallet. Rubles bought ahead of time wait on the balance for the next rent day or lunch.
  • A confirmed payment goes through at once. A QR payment cannot be cancelled once confirmed, and a payout to the wrong person cannot be recalled — check the amount and details.
  • Minimums. Payouts start at 1,500 ₽ over SBP and 3,500 ₽ to a card.

FAQ

How do international students pay rent in Russia?

Usually by transfer to the landlord's phone number over SBP or to a Russian card. Without a Russian account yet, you can send rubles from a wallet's ruble balance with a payout: fee 6%, from 1,500 ₽ over SBP.

Can I pay university tuition in Russia with USDT?

No, the university receives rubles. You can convert USDT to rubles in a separate step and pay the invoice's SBP QR code from the ruble balance, if the university offers one; for transfers by invoice details you need a Russian bank account.

Can a foreign student open a bank account in Russia?

Yes. Banks usually ask for a passport, a notarised translation, a migration card, migration registration and university documents or the education contract. Requirements differ by bank.

How can my family support me while I study in Russia?

If buying and sending USDT is legal where they live, they can send USDT to your wallet's deposit address or, if they use Matrimix too, by Matrimix ID for free. You then convert it to rubles. Check local rules first.

Do I need a Mir card as a student?

For a semester or longer it is useful: stipends and salaries usually go to a Russian account, and some universities accept tuition only by bank transfer. A wallet's ruble balance covers you from the first day, and later it can send rubles bought with USDT straight to your own card.
