Private Swap — Break the Link Between Your Addresses
Matrimix private mode routes a swap through Monero or the Zcash shielded pool, keeps no IP and no trackers, and still screens every address against OFAC.
A private swap routes your coins through a privacy-preserving network so the sending and receiving addresses are not directly linked on a public blockchain. Matrimix private mode routes the swap through Monero or the Zcash shielded pool and keeps no IP and no trackers, while every address is still screened against sanctions lists.
Why financial confidentiality matters
On Bitcoin, Ethereum or Tron every transaction is public forever. Once someone links one address to your name — through a payment, a withdrawal or a forum post — they can see your balance, your income and everyone you pay.
Cash does not work this way. When you pay with a banknote, the shop does not learn your salary. Financial confidentiality is the same idea applied to crypto: protection from surveillance, targeted scams and competitors reading your books. It is a legitimate need, and it is compatible with following the law.
How Monero and Zcash shielded routing work
Both networks are designed so that ordinary transactions do not reveal everything to every observer.
- Monero (XMR) hides the sender among a group of possible signers (ring signatures), uses one-time addresses for every receipt (stealth addresses) and hides amounts (RingCT). An observer sees that a transaction happened, but not who paid whom or how much.
- Zcash (ZEC) offers a shielded pool. Transactions inside it use zero-knowledge proofs: the network verifies a transaction is valid without seeing addresses or amounts.
When a swap passes through one of these networks, the public chain on your side shows coins going to a provider, and the public chain on the other side shows coins arriving from a provider. The middle step does not publish a direct link between the two.
What Matrimix private mode does
| Step | Standard swap | Private mode |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Best available provider for the pair | Through Monero or the Zcash shielded pool |
| IP address | Standard server logs | No IP kept |
| Trackers and analytics | Minimal | None |
| Registration | Not required | Not required |
| Sanctions screening | Every address checked | Every address checked |
| Refund if the swap fails | To your refund address | To your refund address |
You open private mode, choose the pair, enter the destination and refund addresses, and see the full cost of the route before you commit. Coins go straight to the address you enter — Matrimix is non-custodial on the exchange side and does not hold your funds between steps.
Matrimix is not a mixer. It does not pool coins from different users or shuffle them together. It is an exchange aggregator that can route a swap through networks with built-in confidentiality.
Limits and honest caveats
Private routing reduces what a casual observer can see. It does not make you invisible, and you should know the limits:
- Your own behaviour matters most. Sending the exact same amount in and out within minutes, or reusing an address linked to your name, makes the link easy to guess.
- The endpoints are public. If your destination is an account at a custodial exchange, that exchange knows who you are.
- Providers have their own rules. A provider may ask questions or hold a deposit for review. Check the status page.
- More steps, more cost and time. Routing through XMR or ZEC adds a leg, so fees and time can be higher. The full cost is shown before you confirm; see fees.
- Rates move. On a floating-rate route the final amount can differ from the quote.
- Transactions are irreversible. Double-check the network and address before sending.
Compliance stays on
Privacy and compliance work together. In every mode, Matrimix screens each destination and refund address against the OFAC SDN sanctions list, updated every 12 hours, and does not process matches. Prohibited use — including moving proceeds of crime or funds subject to sanctions — is listed in the Terms and the AML policy. If a swap cannot complete, it is refunded to your refund address.
Deposit addresses are signed by Matrimix, and you can verify the signature to make sure you are not on a phishing clone (see Security).
FAQ
Is a private swap legal?
Using privacy-preserving coins such as Monero or Zcash for lawful purposes is legal in many jurisdictions, but rules differ by country. Check your local laws; prohibited use is listed in the Terms.
Does private mode cost more?
It can, because the route has an extra leg. Matrimix shows the full cost of each route before you commit, so you can compare it with a standard swap.
Can I just swap to Monero and keep it?
Yes. You can swap directly, for example BTC to XMR, and keep XMR in your own wallet or in the Matrimix wallet.
