Chinese Tourists in Russia: UnionPay, Alipay and SBP
PRC passports enter Russia visa-free until 2027, but paying is patchy. What works: cash, UnionPay, Alipay in tourist spots and a ruble balance for SBP QR codes.

Contents
Chinese tourists in Russia can enter visa-free on a PRC passport for up to 30 days, but paying is patchy: UnionPay cards work only at some tills and ATMs, and Alipay and WeChat Pay only in places that court Chinese visitors. Bring cash. If you already hold USDT legally where you live, a Telegram wallet can convert it to a ruble balance for paying SBP QR codes.
Key facts (October 2026)
- Visa-free entry: PRC ordinary passports, up to 30 days per trip (tourism, business, guest visits, events, transit), in force since 1 December 2025 and extended to 31 December 2027.
- Hong Kong and Macau: HKSAR passports 14 days visa-free, Macau SAR passports 30 days, up to 90 days in any 180.
- The biggest market: 1.76 million trips by Chinese citizens in 2025; 380,600 tourism trips in the first half of 2026 (+19.7%), 56% of all tourism trips to Russia.
- UnionPay cash limits: cards issued in mainland China can withdraw up to the equivalent of CNY 10,000 a day per card and CNY 100,000 a year per person abroad.
- Alipay: Moscow's tourism committee counted about 3,000 points of sale accepting Alipay QR codes and UnionPay cards in 2024 — a small share of the city.
- Telegram is blocked in mainland China and largely blocked in Russia since mid-March 2026.
- Crypto in mainland China: crypto business activities are illegal financial activities; a February 2026 notice by the central bank and seven other agencies restated this.
- Ruble-balance route: 3% QR fee; rubles are bought with USDT at the wallet rate, shown before you confirm; ruble payouts 6%.
Who this guide is for — and who it is not for
The wallet part of this guide is for travellers who already hold USDT legally where they live: residents of Hong Kong, Taiwan or Singapore, the Chinese diaspora, business travellers based outside the mainland.
If you live in mainland China, it is not for you. Mainland rules treat exchanging fiat for crypto, and services that provide it, as prohibited; overseas providers may not serve mainland residents. Do not buy or exchange USDT for this trip. Cash, UnionPay and Alipay are your tools, and the first half of this guide still applies.

UnionPay in Russia: real, but not everywhere
UnionPay International says its cards are accepted at some malls, supermarkets and restaurants in Russia, and that some ATMs in dozens of cities, including Moscow, St Petersburg and Vladivostok, dispense rubles. In practice acceptance depends on the issuer and the terminal. Many issuers outside the mainland have restricted Russian transactions, so if your UnionPay card is from a Hong Kong or other foreign bank, ask the bank before you fly.
- Expect two fees on ATM withdrawals: your bank's and, sometimes, the Russian ATM operator's.
- Mainland-issued cards are capped abroad at CNY 10,000 a day per card and CNY 100,000 a year per person; exceed the yearly cap and overseas withdrawals are suspended for that year and the next.
- Treat UnionPay as a backup, not a plan. More in Mir and UnionPay cards for foreigners.
Alipay and WeChat Pay: tourist spots only
You are most likely to see Alipay and WeChat Pay at hotels, restaurants, department stores and souvenir shops that cater to Chinese groups, mostly in central Moscow and St Petersburg. Ordinary supermarkets, cafés, markets, taxis and the metro usually do not take them. Both wallets work most smoothly with a mainland account; if you use a regional version, check before the trip whether it is accepted in Russia.
Cash: yuan and US dollars
Russian banks and exchange offices commonly change both yuan and US dollars; bring clean notes and your passport. Leaving the mainland, a person may carry up to RMB 20,000 in cash and foreign currency up to USD 5,000 without a permit; USD 5,000–10,000 needs a bank-issued carrying permit. On arrival, Russia requires a written declaration if your cash exceeds USD 10,000 in total. See how much cash can I bring to Russia.
Ways to pay compared
| Method | Works where | Setup | Cost | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cash (CNY, USD → rubles) | Everywhere | Exchange office, passport | Exchange spread | Loss, carrying limits |
| UnionPay card | Some shops and ATMs | None | Issuer and ATM fees | Unpredictable acceptance |
| Alipay / WeChat Pay | Tourist-oriented places | Existing account | Wallet's FX rate | Narrow coverage |
| USDT wallet with a ruble balance (Matrimix) | Any SBP QR code; phone-number payouts | About a minute in Telegram, no documents | 3% per QR plus the wallet rate; payouts 6% | Only for legal USDT holders; Telegram restrictions |
The pillar guide how to pay in Russia as a tourist covers every option.
Telegram: set it up before you need it
Telegram is not accessible in mainland China. If you live in Hong Kong, Taiwan or Singapore, install it and set up the wallet at home. If your trip starts from the mainland, set it up somewhere Telegram works before you travel: in Russia, hotel Wi-Fi and foreign roaming SIMs no longer get around the restrictions.
In Russia, Telegram is largely blocked: since mid-March 2026 most connections fail on mobile data and Wi-Fi alike, and since July 2026 foreign SIM and eSIM roaming is filtered too. Buy rubles before the trip: they wait on the balance until you pay. Details: does Telegram work in Russia.
The ruble-balance route for legal USDT holders
You do not pay a merchant with crypto — Russian law forbids that. You convert USDT to rubles inside the wallet as a separate step, and the wallet pays the merchant rubles over SBP, Russia's Faster Payments System. See is crypto legal in Russia.
Before the trip: open @MatrimixBot and start the Mini App. The interface is English or Russian (Profile → Settings → Language); no e-mail, phone or documents are asked. Deposit USDT on TRC20 or TON from your own wallet or a platform licensed where you live; deposits are free on our side.
At the till:
- Convert. Swap (USDT → RUB), or the Ruble card → Swap. The rate is shown before you confirm.
- Scan. The QR button in the centre of the bottom menu → Scan, or Pay by payment link for a link. Ask: «Можно оплатить по QR-коду СБП?» (Can I pay by SBP QR code?).
- Check Recipient, Amount, Fee, You pay. If the QR has no amount, enter the figure agreed with the seller.
- Confirm. Slide Pay …, wait for Paid; the PDF is under Receipt.
The quote lives about 30 seconds ("Rate expired — refresh"). More: QR payments and SBP QR codes from a USDT balance.
Worked example: a 5,000 ₽ souvenir purchase
Suppose, for illustration, the wallet rate is 76.40 ₽ per USDT.
| Line | Value |
|---|---|
| Amount | 5,000 ₽ |
| Fee (3%) | 150 ₽ |
| You pay | 5,150 ₽ from the ruble balance |
| Rubles bought at 76.40 ₽ | about 67.41 USDT |
No stack of notes to count, and every line is on the screen before you confirm. Current numbers: /fees.
Paying a guide or driver by phone number: Services → Payouts via SBP and card number → Withdraw via SBP / card → SBP or Card → Send rubles → Delivered. Fee 6% on top; SBP 1,500–60,000 ₽, card 3,500–100,000 ₽. See ruble payouts.
Good to know
- Not for mainland residents, as explained above.
- Clear pricing: 3% per QR payment plus the wallet rate, payouts 6% — every total is shown before you confirm.
- We keep the coins and rubles for you: no seed phrases, everything opens in Telegram.
- A confirmed payment goes through at once: check the amount and the recipient before you slide. Merchant refunds go through Request a refund to the ruble balance, without the fee. Failed payments return automatically.
- Limits: 200,000 ₽ per payment, 200,000 ₽ and 20 payments a day, 1,000,000 ₽ and 100 a month; ruble balance up to 200,000 ₽.
- Law: Russian Federal Law 282-FZ forbids accepting crypto as payment. This describes how the wallet works; it is not legal advice.

FAQ
Does UnionPay work in Russia?
Sometimes. UnionPay cards are accepted at some shops and ATMs, but acceptance depends on the issuing bank and the terminal. Mainland-issued cards also have daily and yearly cash limits abroad. Carry cash as well.
Can I use Alipay or WeChat Pay in Russia?
Only in some places, mostly hotels, restaurants and shops that serve Chinese tourists in central Moscow and St Petersburg. Supermarkets, taxis and the metro usually do not accept them.
Can I pay with crypto in Russia?
No — Russian law forbids merchants to accept crypto. If you hold USDT legally where you live, convert it to a ruble balance in the wallet first, then pay SBP QR codes in rubles. The merchant receives rubles.
I live in mainland China. Can I use the USDT route?

Does Telegram work in Russia?
Unreliably. Since mid-March 2026 most connections to Telegram fail on Russian networks, on mobile data and Wi-Fi alike, and since July 2026 foreign roaming SIMs are filtered too. Set up the wallet and buy rubles before you travel; they wait on the balance until you pay.
